I was told by my manager to get FAC-P/PM training and I don’t know where to start. Can you help me?

Yes - Absolutely. Please feel free to call us at 703-224-8242 or contact us. We know that the FAC-P/PM requirements are complex and can be confusing. We’ll help you determine what level you are and explain step by step how to get you the FAC-P/PM training you need. You can also see some of the answers below to our most Frequently Asked Questions.

What is FAC-P/PM?

FAC-P/PM stands for Federal Acquisition Certification for Program and Project Managers. It is a structured training and development program for program and project managers established by the Office of Federal Procurement Policy (OFPP) and documented in a policy memorandum, dated April 25, 2007.

The purpose for creating FAC-P/PM is to establish general training and experience requirements to Program and project managers within civilian agencies (OFPP memorandum, page 1) and provide consistency of those training requirements by making the training “competency-based”. For FAC-P/PM, there are seven competencies: See our FAC-P/PM course mapping for more information. All of our FAC-P/PM courses have been designed from the ground up to map directly to the Competencies required by OFPP and FAI. All courses have been reviewed by FAI and have been found, without exception, to “fully map to the indicated FAC-P/PM competencies and/or aligned skills.”

How many levels of FAC-P/PM are there? AND what level am I?

The FAC Academy provides three levels of FAC-P/PM training that align with those designated by the Federal Acquisition Institute (FAI). These levels are:

  • 1) Entry / Beginner
  • 2) Mid / Journeyman
  • 3) Senior / Expert

My Appropriate FAC-P/PM Level

Level Experience Level
Entry / Beginner New Project Managers with at least 1 year of project management experience.  Typically responsible for basic, low-risk projects.
Mid / Journeyman Project Managers with at least 2 years of project management experience.  Typically responsible for medium-sized, moderate-risk projects.
Senior / Expert Project Managers with at least 4 years of project management experience in the last 10, with at least one year on a Federal program or project.  Typically responsible for large, high-risk projects, and/or named on an OMB-300.

Please Note: All of our FAC-P/PM levels are FAI-verified as meeting all OFPP/FAI v2.1 Performance Outcomes for all 7 FAC-P/PM training Comepetencies.

Do your FAC-P/PM courses meet all of the FAI Required Competencies?

Yes, all of our FAC-P/PM courses have been verified by FAI as aligning to OFPP/FAI's FAC-P/PM training competencies and performance outcomes, at all three certification levels (Entry, Mid, and Senior).

The courses available through the FAC Academy have been designed from the ground up to map directly to the Competencies required by the Federal Acquisition Certification for Program and Project Managers (FAC-P/PM) program, as required by OMB and as outlined by OFPP and FAI.

What do I need to get FAC-P/PM certified?

The FAC Academy's FAC-P/PM training programs have been verified by FAI as meeting all OFPP/FAI FAC-P/PM training competencies and performance outcomes, and we work closely with many civilian agencies to provide the training for their program and project managers.

Each FAC-P/PM certification level - Entry, Mid, and Senior - also requires a certain amount of on-the-job experience.  Please see "How Many Levels of FAC-P/PM Are There?" for a table of standard experience requirements.

It’s important to note that the FAC-P/PM certification process itself is administered by each civilian agency, and that some agencies may have additional requirements in addition to the OFPP/FAI standard. Your agency is responsible for providing you with your actual certification regardless of which training vendor you go through. Speaking with your Acquisition Career Manager (ACM) is the best way to determine your agency’s specific FAC-P/PM certification process.

Please feel free to call us at 703-224-8242 or contact us online with questions regarding this topic as we know it can be confusing for many students. We’re here to assist you.

Are your classes “government specific”?

Yes. 100%. Our 4-course FAC-P/PM programs are so tightly integrated, and address FAC-P/PM requirements so comprehensively, that each course within our curriculum is inherently “Government specific.” You won’t necessarily see the words “Government Specific” in the course titles, but all of our courses were created by Federal acquisition professionals specifically to meet the unique needs of Federal acquisition professionals. Therefore, our courses were built based on the specific FAC-P/PM requirements and the unique needs of government acquisition professional.

Government-specific content is integrated into every discussion, slide, exercise, assessment and case, eliminating the need for costly additional “Government Specific” or “Capstone” courses. This has allowed FAI to approve our programs as meeting all to meet FAC-P/PM requirements, without the need for these additional courses.

As much as we love teaching, we don’t want you to spend any more time in the classroom than is necessary, and we certainly don’t want you to waste your scarce training dollars on courses that you don’t need to take. We want to give you the most comprehensive, integrated, cost-effective FAI-verified FAC-P/PM training possible – and get you back to the workplace with the skills you need to make an immediate impact.

I have taken some FAC-P/PM courses through another vendor. Can I take the remaining FAC-P/PM courses with you?

Yes. You can absolutely complete your training with us. We will work with you to determine what topics you have covered in your previous class(es) and help fill in the gaps of your training. Our goal is to help you gain the tools and skills you need to return to your job with the FAC-P/PM skillset in a timely and cost-effective manner.
